A solitary goal from the boot of Katlego “Mahoota” Mashego was enough as Chippa United brushed aside Kaizer Chiefs at a packed Sisa Dukashe in Mdantsane on Saturday, 05 August 2017.
Early showers on the day did little to dampen the spirits of football fanatics, with 14 000 fans coming to witness the Inaugural Premier’s Cup in Mdantsane – the second biggest township in South Africa.
In attendance were Premier of the Province, Phumulo Masualle, MEC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Pemmy Majodina, Executive Mayor Xola Pakati and SAFA BCM President Prince Sibham.
Executive Chairman, Siviwe Mpengesi handed over a cheque of R300 000 to SAFA BCM for the development of football in the region.
On the pitch, the Chilli Boys did not disappoint as they dominated Kaizer Chiefs.
Head Coach, Dan Malesela had an opportunity to see the likes of Mabaso, Lentjies, Mayambela, Mhlongo, Sekola in action and was pleased with the preparations ahead of the 2017/2018 season.
The game was also used to send a strong message condemning the abuse of women and children, with the Premier, Executive Mayor, both team representatives and captains signing a Pledge.
The Premier announced before kick-off that the Premier’s Cup will be an annual event.
The cutain-raiser match between Chippa United MDC and BCM/Mdantsane X1 was called off due to rain and will be played at a later date to be announced.
The were no reported incidents at the game, something which pleased the Local Organizing Committee that was hard at work for the past week to ensure the game is incident free.
The partnership between Chippa United, NAFSA and Department of Sports yielded positive results as supporters met and discussed concerns over late comings to the stadium, fake tickets at the City Hall prior to the game.
The newly launched Chilli Boys Supporters Package was activated at the stadium, and the feedback from supporters was amazing.
The 1-0 win also reinforced the theme of the season, #SeasonOfVictory.
