Chippa United beat a gallant Rangers FC 8-7 on penalties to successfully defend their 2016 Engen Knockout Challenge hosted at the Glelvandale Sports Complex on Sunday, 03 July 2016.
The young ChilliBoys produced some exciting brand of football in reminiscent of the first team exploits on their way to win the competition and qualify for national championships to be held in Gauteng later in the year.
The final was an intense battle with end to end action the game ended goalless leading to penalty shootout.
Both set of teams showed high level of technical ability during a dreaded shootout, eventually Chippa United scored their winning penalty in the sudden death shootout after a Rangers player had dragged his spot kick wide.
Chippa United under the tutelage of Siyabonga Gwambi assisted by Head of Development Glen Minnie was impressive throughout the tournament beating Highlands Spurs 2-1 in the semi finals.
Club Chief Executive Officer Peter Koutroulis congratulated the U17 side; “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate ‘Siya’ Gwambi, his Technical Team on successfully defending the Engen Knockout Challenge. We are proud of the work that has been going on in the development and mostly proud of the young lads for their exploits.
“The aim at that level is not winning but developing players and the sign show that we are on the right track. Congratulations also to Engen and we thank the community of Glelvandale and surrounding areas for supporting the cause,” added a visibly elated Koutroulis.
