Head of Development, Glen Minnie has expressed his delight following an impressive 4-1 win against last season MDC champions, Golden Arrows at Wolfson Stadium, KwaZakhele in Port Elizabeth on Sunday, 26 February 2017.
Luxolo Nabo (2), Gregory Damons and Sizwe Mdlinzo scored the goals for the Chippa United side.
Minnie said speaking to chippautdfc.co.za on Monday afternoon; “It was a great win especially with us using younger players who stepped up. The lads had worked hard in training prior to the game and it showed off on match day,”
Chippa finished in position 7th this season; “Our first objective is to develop good players for the first team, and I think we are still on track with regards to this looking at the number of young players that have graduated to the first this season and last season. The highlight for us was competing and beating the top teams in the country and finishing on 7th position after finishing on last position last season.
“Also at the development perspective was the performance of our U19 side and our players getting time to train with the first team. This has instilled a sense of self belief and the reality that the development players can make the first team in the near future.
Minnie feels there are still lessons to be learned though; “We learned that individual hardwork coupled with teamwork will always bring about desired results including team development. There were many lessons we picked up from this MDC season and we will looking at improving come next season,”
Minnie added saying that he and his staff will not be going on holiday following the end of the MDC season; “Our main focus now is to continue training the U19s and identify the players that will be promoted to the MDC Team. We are going to continue preparations for next season. We also have Bayhill Tournament coming up and we need to prepare for that as well.
