Executive Chairman, Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi paid a glowing tribute to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality during the Living Legends Awards held at the Feather Market Centre, Port Elizabeth on Monday, 18 July 2016.
The event hosted by Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Cllr Danny Jordan was part of the Mandela Day celebrations hosted worldwide in honour of the late president, Dr Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela.
Chippa United led by Chairman, Siviwe Mpengesi were in attendance to what is going to be an annual event in the City.
The Nelson Mandela Bay has been home for Chippa United for the past two seasons and entering a third season; “It has been a great partnership and we are forever grateful to the Municipality for making us their main sporting project,” said Mpengesi accepting an award on behalf of the Club for the team qualifying for MTN8 last season.
“I have learnt two things from Mayor Danny Jordaan; first that I need to take my time when hiring a coach so that I make right appointments.
“He also introduced me to the Head of Finance of the City who introduced me to the protocols and the processes around finance. I am delighted today that we don’t owe our players salaries and we have a healthy balance sheet.
“I thank you Executive Mayor, The Council and the people of this City and the province in its entirety for your support, it means a lot to us. We did quite well last season signing off by beating the two Soweto giants in a space of 10 days.
“We know that it is not going to be easy and again we will be counting on your support to continue being competitive and take this brand to the next level. On behalf of the team we accept the award and thank you
In return Cllr Danny Jordaan who is also the President of South African Football Association had word of praise for the entire team including Head Coach, Dan Malesela who was also in attendance.
“We are proud of your achievements. The upcoming season will be difficult with lot of new teams joining the league, Cape Town City and now Swallows FC. We believe you can only grow maybe five places higher than you finish last season and qualify for a CAF competition.
“I want to take this opportunity to wish you Mr Chippa Mpengesi, Dan Malesela and the entire team in attendance here all the best this upcoming season. We will continue to support your efforts,” said Jordaan with a smile.
The Mayor reserved a special praise for the Club for giving sporting opportunities to the young players from the City; the Club has promoted Sherwin “Modric” Bailey and Bulumko “Neymar” Ceki from Arcadia and Zwide respectively while Siphesihle Stuurman from Veeplaas and Bongani from Uitenhage have also been signed up ahead of the season. Dillon Goss was promoted to the first team last season and is also from Arcadia.
