Chippa United overcame Mpumalanga Black Aces 2-1 in an Absa Premiership clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday night.
The Chilli Boys showed plenty of character as they fought back from 1-0 down to hand AmaZayoni their second defeat of the 2015/16 campaign
Amazayoni were the first to threaten five minutes into the game when Aristide Bance played in a dangerous cross into the Chilli Boys box, and Vincent Kobola cleared the ball away.
Chippa’s diminutive midfielder Buyani Sali fired from outside the Aces box in the tenth minute, but his effort flashed wide of Jackson Mabokgwane’s goal-posts.
The visitors were awarded a free in the 23rd minute after Kobola was fouled. Then his Aces teammate Lehlohonolo Nonyane blasted it past Chippa goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.
In the 32nd minute, Sali became the first player to be booked on the night following his bad challenge on Aces captain Collins Mbesuma two
The home side nearly restored parity five minutes before the halftime break, but Ugonna Uzochukwu’s header sailed over from Lerato Chabangu’s corner-kick.
The Chilli Boys began the second-half brightly, and in the 51st minute Chabangu bounced onto a ball from the edge of the Aces box, and blasted the ball over the cross-bar.
Chabangu never lost hope as he restored parity in the 58th minute after receiving a good pass from his Chippa teammate Bance, and finished with aplomb.
The two teams made changes in the 75th minute with Sali being replaced by Sandile Zuke, while Kpah Sherman came in for Kobola.
However, it was Chippa’s Uzochukwu who grabbed the winning goal with a deflected shot with seven minutes left on the clock.
