Chippa United Head Coach, Dan ‘Dance’ Malesela believes there is still a lot to be done before the team is ready for the season kickoff against Free State Stars on Tuesday, 23 August 2016.

Malesela was speaking following a practice match against first division outfit AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday morning.

Chippa United has been in Howick, KZN for the past 10 days where they played a couple of friendly games against  Golden Arrows, Royal Kings and Thanda Royal Zulu.

“We are not anywhere near our best,” said Malesela responding to a question about the team’s preseason.

Chippa beat AmaZulu with an overall score of 2-1 following 3 x 45 minutes played.

“There is a lot of work to be done. We need to learn from our mistakes. I would say now we are approaching 70% readiness.

“We spent two weeks in Port Elizabeth prior to coming here (Howick). We did not want to take trialists to camp and I was happy to work with the players we have signed only.

“We focused on a lot of things in what was the second phased of our preseason, including the performance aspect, conditioning and we also got to play games and look at different combinations.

Malesela said he was impressed by the response from the players; ” The response from the lads has been good, and I am impressed.

“I have had one-on-ones with some of the players just to discuss their aspirations and development.

“It is also important for players to know what is required from them. It is a responsibility we share with the players that have been here for a while, players who understand the philosophy behind our style of play.

“We don’t want to read too much on the results. Sometimes teams can be on fire during preseason and struggle when the real work starts, but I am pleased with the information we have collected thus far,” added Malesela.

Chippa United will travel to Johannesburg on Thursday where they will spend a week before returning to their base in Port Elizabeth.
