Chippa United Football Club in its totality has paid tribute to Mamelodi Sundowns FC following their historic triumph in Egypt against African powerhouse, Zamalek to win the Champions League by aggregate 3-1.

The Brazillians lost the second leg by 1-0, but they had done enough at home winning by 3-0 to become the second side in Southern Africa to win the most lucrative prize in African club football. Orlando Pirates were the first team from Southern Africa to win the Champions League back in 1995.

Chippa United Chairman, Siviwe Mpengesi sent a congratulatory message to Mamelodi Sundowns; “I want to take this opportunity on behalf of Chippa United to congratulate everyone at Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club; the Head Coach, Pitso Mosimane, the players, staff, and the fans.

“Mamelodi Sundowns’ triumph is thoroughly deserved for the effort and commitment throughout their run in the Champions League. This is a massive moment for South African football.

“The victory can only help take South African football grow to greater heights, and should also go a long way in benefiting our national team.

“We congratulate Mr Patrice Motsepe and we wish the team all the best in the Club World Cup later this year,” added Mpengesi.
